MAIO architects
MAIO is an architectural studio based in Barcelona that works on inclusive and open-ended spatial strategies that promote resiliency and change through time. Their projects span from objects to urban design, aiming to challenge conventional biases, embrace diverse social structures, and address the evolving complexities of daily life with clear and resilient architectural responses. MAIO is run by Maria Charneco, Alfredo Lérida, Guillermo López and Anna Puigjaner, who recently has been nominated finalist of the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Initiative 2016 and awarded with the Harvard GSD Wheelwright Prize. MAIO’s members actively combine professional practice with academic, research, and editorial ones.
They have been editors of Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme (2011–2016) and currently teach at ETH Zurich, ETSAB/ETSAV (Barcelona), and Elisava. They have also taught at several institutions such as the Architectural Association and Columbia GSAPP. MAIO’s work has been showcased internationally at venues including MoMA, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, the Royal Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Triennale di Milano, CIVA, and the Venice Biennale.
